The Master of Teaching (Secondary) is a 72-unit program delivered over either 1.5 years in an accelerated format or two years in a standard format. The accelerated option involves 45 units in the first year and 27 units in the final semester as a full-time load, while the two-year equivalent requires 36 units each year. The program begins with an introduction to teaching and research in education, exploring learners, learning processes, and the importance of building strong professional relationships. Students engage in curriculum studies that focus on understanding and developing curriculum in context for both middle and senior secondary years, with opportunities to pursue specialist teaching areas. Assessment in education is also a key component, equipping students with the skills to design, implement, and evaluate effective assessment practices. The course includes topics that address differentiation, inclusive education, and teaching Indigenous Australian students, ensuring graduates can respond to diverse classroom needs. Additional areas of study include professional issues in secondary education, literacy and numeracy for the middle and senior years, and the integration of information and communication technologies in teaching.Professional experience placements form a core part of the program, supported by preparation lectures and preliminary activities. These placements allow students to apply their learning in real classrooms, develop confidence in managing learning environments, and reflect critically on their practice. By the end of the program, graduates are equipped with the pedagogical knowledge, professional skills, and practical experience required to become effective, responsive, and reflective secondary teachers.
