The Master of Nutrition and Dietetics at Flinders University is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience required for professional practice as a dietitian. The program combines lectures, tutorials, field placements, site visits, food practicals, and student seminars and presentations, providing a comprehensive and applied learning experience. Students gain expertise in the nutrition care process, food service and professional practice, research methods and critical thinking in human nutrition, communication and nutrition counselling, and clinical nutrition and dietetics.A key component of the program is professional experience placement, which allows students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings. Placements are available across a range of metropolitan, rural, and interstate health facilities, offering exposure to diverse clinical environments and patient populations. The program ensures students develop practical skills, critical thinking, and professional competence necessary for effective practice in dietetics. Travel and accommodation costs for rural and interstate placements are subsidised to support students in completing these essential experiences.Practical experience requirements include specified health checks, immunisations, and criminal history screening in accordance with University and Department of Health policies. Successful applicants are provided guidance on completing these requirements to ensure compliance and safety during clinical placements.Through the combination of rigorous academic study and applied practice, graduates of the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics are equipped to provide evidence-based nutritional care, work effectively in interprofessional health teams, and deliver high-quality dietetic services. The program prepares students to address a broad range of health issues, promote well-being, and contribute to public health initiatives. Graduates emerge as competent and confident dietitians ready to work in hospitals, community health settings, private practice, and other allied health environments, with the practical and professional experience necessary to thrive in their careers.
