The Master of Maritime Archaeology at Flinders University offers students the opportunity to engage with both the theory and practice of maritime and underwater archaeology while also exploring related disciplines such as geophysics and heritage management. The program covers a wide range of topics including maritime archaeology in Australia, seafaring in the ancient world, and participation in a maritime archaeology field school. Students without a prior background in archaeology may be required to undertake additional study to build foundational knowledge. A distinctive feature of the program is its strong emphasis on practical experience, enabling students to learn not only in the classroom but also in diverse field environments. Flinders organises annual field schools across Australia and internationally through the UNESCO UNITWIN Network for Underwater Archaeology, in which the university is a full member and former coordinator. These field schools provide hands-on training in the practical skill sets required for underwater archaeology, including scientific diving. In addition, student internships are available through partnerships with government cultural heritage agencies and museums, offering valuable professional experience. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the program’s strong international networks to enhance their learning in both field and classroom contexts. The Maritime Archaeology Program at Flinders is widely recognised for combining academic study with immersive fieldwork, ensuring graduates develop both the theoretical knowledge and applied skills needed to work in underwater cultural heritage. This unique combination prepares students for careers in heritage management, archaeology, and museum or government sectors, while also equipping them with the ability to contribute to international research and preservation efforts. Through this blend of research, training, and practical engagement, the program ensures students graduate with the expertise required to address contemporary challenges in maritime and underwater archaeology.
