The Doctor of Philosophy (Clinical Psychology) at Flinders University is a four-year research degree that combines advanced clinical training with original doctoral-level research, preparing graduates to become highly skilled scientist-practitioners in the field of psychology. The program requires students to complete a substantial piece of original research in a specialised area of clinical psychology, supported by supervised field placements and relevant coursework. Through this integration of theory, research and practice, students develop expertise in areas such as counselling and professional issues, clinical child psychology, cognitive behaviour therapy, psychological assessment, abnormal psychology, psychopharmacology, and research methods. The course provides valuable practical experience through clinical placements, ensuring that students gain the applied skills and professional competencies needed to thrive in real-world health care and community settings. Graduates of the program meet the requirements for general registration as psychologists with the Psychology Board of Australia and are eligible for membership with the Australian Psychological Society (APS). After completing the necessary post-degree supervision requirements, graduates may also qualify for membership with the APS College of Clinical Psychologists and practise as fully recognised clinical psychologists under national registration standards. This prestigious qualification offers a wide range of career opportunities, equipping graduates with the ability to contribute to clinical practice, research, and policy. Potential career pathways include roles as clinical psychologists, mental health consultants, academic researchers, health policy advisers, and specialist practitioners in hospitals, health care facilities, community organisations and private practice. Potential employers include hospitals and clinical laboratories, government health departments, community and mental health organisations, research institutes, universities, and private health services. With a strong foundation in both clinical expertise and research excellence, this program enables graduates to play a key role in advancing mental health practice and improving outcomes for individuals and communities.
