Course Curriculum

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) at Flinders University is structured around three key themes: doctor and patient, knowledge of health and illness, and health professions and society. The program emphasises student-centred learning, supporting the longitudinal development of the knowledge, skills, and personal and professional attributes required of a competent medical practitioner. Core topics include doctor–patient interactions, understanding health and illness, the role of health professions in society, socially responsible health practice, clinical research foundations, and advanced studies in medicine.A distinctive feature of the MD program is its strong practical focus, blending community-based and hospital training to provide students with exposure to the full spectrum of healthcare, from primary to tertiary levels. Students participate in practicals and clinical placements throughout the course, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world clinical environments. This hands-on approach ensures graduates develop clinical competence, professional judgement, and the ability to deliver high-quality patient care across diverse settings.Practical experience requirements include completion of clinical placements that meet workplace expectations. Students undertaking these placements must comply with relevant immunisation standards, such as those outlined in the Health Immunisation for Health Care Workers in South Australia 2014 Policy Guideline, as well as any additional requirements from private healthcare providers.
