Course Curriculum

The Bachelor of Environmental Science at Flinders University provides a structured and multidisciplinary curriculum that equips students with the knowledge and skills to understand, monitor, and manage environmental systems while assessing the impact of human activity on natural processes. In the first year, students build a broad foundation with core topics such as Evolution of Biological Diversity, Earth and Environmental Science, Marine Sciences, Introduction to Geographical Information Systems, and the Nature of Science. Students also complete a mathematics or numeracy topic and select a range of electives, providing flexibility to explore interests and develop essential analytical skills.In the second year, students expand their expertise in environmental science with core topics including Global Climate Change, Geological Processes, Introduction to Remote Sensing, Hydrology, and Environmental Change and Human Health. Additional topics in Australian Environmental Change or Ecology, alongside a range of electives, allow students to tailor their studies and gain a deeper understanding of environmental challenges specific to local and global contexts. This stage emphasizes practical application, analytical reasoning, and the integration of scientific knowledge across disciplines.The third year focuses on advanced study and field-based learning. Core topics include Microbiology of Our Environment, Field Studies in Environmental Disciplines, the Geology of Australia, and Ecohydrology, along with applied environmental practice topics and electives. Students gain hands-on experience, develop research and data analysis skills, and learn to apply scientific principles to real-world environmental problems, preparing them for professional practice or further study.The honours year offers high-performing students the opportunity to undertake a major research thesis, providing in-depth experience in scientific investigation, data interpretation, and project management. Additional training develops professional skills relevant to research and development, equipping graduates to pursue careers in environmental consultancy, conservation, resource management, sustainability planning, or further postgraduate study.
