The Bachelor of Science (Animal Behaviour and Welfare) at Flinders University offers a structured and progressive curriculum that equips students with both scientific knowledge and practical skills to understand, analyse, and manage animal behaviour within ethical and societal contexts. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through core topics such as the Evolution of Biological Diversity, Molecular Basis of Life, Introduction to Animal Behaviour, the Nature of Science, and Biostatistics. Students also study Chemical Structure and Bonding or General Chemistry, a chemistry topic relevant to the life sciences, and select additional electives, providing opportunities to explore personal interests and establish a broad scientific base.In the second year, students deepen their understanding of biological and behavioural principles through core topics in Experimental Design and Statistics for Biology, Genetics, Evolution and Biodiversity, Ecology, Animal Diversity, Foundations of Animal Behaviour, and Disease and Immunology. This stage of the program focuses on applying theoretical knowledge to practical investigations, fostering critical thinking, analytical skills, and scientific reasoning. The third year emphasizes advanced study and applied research. Core topics include Conservation Biology and Restoration Ecology, Marine and Freshwater Biology, Plant and Algal Diversity, Integrative Physiology of Animals and Plants, Research in Animal Behaviour, and Conservation and Ecological Genetics. Students also choose elective topics to tailor their learning to individual interests and career goals. This year combines fieldwork, laboratory research, and data analysis, providing hands-on experience and practical skills necessary for professional practice. The honours year allows high-performing students to undertake a major research thesis in animal behaviour, offering in-depth experience in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication. Additionally, students further develop professional skills relevant to research and development, preparing them for careers in wildlife management, conservation, research, education, or advanced study. By combining scientific expertise, practical experience, and ethical awareness, the program prepares graduates to make meaningful contributions to the study, care, and protection of animals.
