Course Curriculum

The Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology) at Flinders University provides a structured curriculum that combines life sciences, practical laboratory training, and professional skills to prepare students for careers in biotechnology and related fields. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge in key scientific areas. Core topics include the Evolution of Biological Diversity, Molecular Basis of Life, and Introduction to Biotechnology. Students without a strong background in chemistry also complete introductory chemistry courses, while the option to choose an additional first-year science topic allows for exploration and personalisation of the degree. This year lays the groundwork for both theoretical understanding and practical laboratory skills, ensuring students are ready for more specialised study.In the second year, students deepen their expertise across both scientific and professional domains. Core topics include Genetics, Evolution and Biodiversity, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and the Legal, Ethical, and Social Aspects of Bioscience. This combination equips students with a holistic understanding of biotechnology, integrating scientific principles with awareness of the broader regulatory, ethical, and societal context. Students also select an elective topic, providing flexibility to explore complementary areas of interest or to begin tailoring their studies to specific career goalsThe third year focuses on advanced study and applied biotechnology. Core topics include Protein to Proteome, DNA to Genome, Integrating Molecular Biosciences, Integrating Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, and BioBusiness. These courses provide in-depth knowledge of molecular and cellular processes, data analysis, and the practical application of biotechnology techniques in research and industry. Students also complete an elective topic, allowing further specialisation. By combining technical expertise with practical and professional skills, graduates are well-prepared to enter careers in biomedical research, pharmaceuticals, environmental biotechnology, bio-manufacturing, or to pursue further study and research in specialised areas of biotechnology.
