The Bachelor of Science (Animal Behaviour) at Flinders University provides a structured and progressive curriculum that builds foundational knowledge in biology, psychology, and animal science while preparing students for specialised study and research in later years. In the first year, students focus on core topics that establish a broad understanding of life sciences and scientific methods. These include the Evolution of Biological Diversity, Molecular Basis of Life, Psychology, Science Communication, and Chemical Structure and Bonding. Students also select one elective, allowing them to explore complementary areas of interest and begin tailoring their degree to their career goals. This foundational year emphasizes both theoretical understanding and practical skills, preparing students for more advanced study. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge of ecology, genetics, and evolution while studying the Foundations of Animal Behaviour, providing insight into the mechanisms underlying animal actions and interactions. Biostatistics equips students with the quantitative and analytical skills needed to interpret behavioural data and conduct rigorous scientific research. Additionally, students choose one optional topic, offering flexibility to broaden their expertise or explore interdisciplinary interests. This year emphasizes critical thinking, research methods, and the application of theory to real-world biological and behavioural questions. The third year focuses on advanced study and research in animal behaviour, preparing students for careers in wildlife management, conservation, and scientific research. Core topics include Human Impacts and Biodiversity, Research in Animal Behaviour, Integrative Physiology of Animals and Plants, Marine Mammals, Birds and Reptiles, and Global Climate Change. Students also select two option topics to specialise further and tailor their learning. This stage combines fieldwork, laboratory research, and analytical study, enabling students to develop practical skills and a deep understanding of the ecological, physiological, and behavioural factors that influence animals and their environments.
