The Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) at Flinders University is a four-year program designed to provide students with a thorough grounding in psychological theory, research, and practice while also developing the advanced skills necessary for honours-level study and professional pathways. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of psychology through topics such as psychology, research methods, psychology of surviving and thriving, and mental health and wellbeing. Alongside these, three option topics allow students to begin shaping their learning journey in areas of personal interest. The second year builds on this base with a focus on applied areas of psychology and advanced research skills. Core topics include research methods, social and organisational psychology, cognition and learning, psychological assessment, and psychology for children and adolescents. Students also select three elective topics, providing the opportunity to expand knowledge and explore areas that complement psychology. By the third year, the program integrates more specialised and applied areas of study, with core topics such as research methods, applications of psychological science, clinical psychology, and a professional placement that gives students valuable real-world experience in psychology-related settings. Students also undertake three electives and three option topics, deepening their expertise in chosen fields and preparing for the honours stage. The fourth year is dedicated to the honours component, which includes the completion of a psychology honours thesis, a capstone research project that allows students to demonstrate independent research skills under academic supervision. Alongside this, students study advanced topics in communicating knowledge, evidence-based practice, and research and practice, consolidating their abilities to analyse, evaluate, and apply psychological principles at a high level. This structured progression ensures that by graduation, students not only have a strong theoretical foundation but also the practical experience and research expertise required for further postgraduate training or entry into diverse professional roles across psychology and related fields.
