Course Curriculum

The Bachelor of Nursing (Preregistration) at Flinders University is carefully designed to develop students into skilled, reflective, and compassionate registered nurses through a balance of theory, clinical practice, and professional development across three years of study. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in healthcare by studying human anatomy and physiology, First Nations health and cultural safety, and psychosocial perspectives in health. This year also includes the first professional placement, giving students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a healthcare setting early in their studies, helping them connect classroom knowledge to real-world practice. In the second year, the program advances into more complex aspects of nursing, focusing on nursing management of health, safety and quality in health, and the legal and ethical considerations of nursing practice. Students also continue with professional placements to further strengthen their clinical competence and confidence in delivering safe, evidence-based care. The third year is designed to consolidate the knowledge and skills gained throughout the program while preparing students for entry into professional practice. Core topics include the role and responsibilities of the professional nurse, advanced study in the care of people with chronic and complex healthcare needs, and a final series of professional placements. These placements allow students to refine their clinical skills, apply theoretical learning in diverse environments, and prepare for the transition into the nursing workforce. Throughout the degree, the curriculum emphasizes cultural awareness, patient safety, critical thinking, and ethical practice, ensuring graduates are equipped to meet the evolving needs of healthcare systems and the communities they serve. By the end of the program, students emerge as competent, confident, and adaptable nurses who are ready to provide high-quality care, contribute to improving health outcomes, and embark on a meaningful and rewarding nursing career.
