The Bachelor of Medical Science at Flinders University provides a comprehensive and flexible pathway for students interested in health, research, and biomedical sciences. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through core topics in biology, chemistry, physiology, and skills for medical scientists. Alongside these, students select option topics from areas including biotechnology, biostatistics, public health, nutrition, business studies, and innovation, or choose one of three specialised majors: Human Physiology, Neuroscience and Anatomy; Molecular Medicine; or Human Immunology and Infectious Diseases. This foundational year equips students with essential scientific understanding and practical laboratory skills while allowing them to begin tailoring their studies to their interests and career goals. The second year expands on this foundation with core topics in biochemistry, human physiology, molecular biology, and skills for medical scientists. Students further specialise through elective topics in areas such as human immunology and infectious diseases, fundamental neuroscience, virology, and microbiology. This stage develops students’ analytical and research skills, while enhancing practical laboratory competencies required for biomedical research and clinical applications. In the third year, students consolidate their expertise with advanced study in a chosen specialisation, which may include physiology and neuroscience, medical biotechnology, pharmacology and toxicology, biochemistry and molecular biology, nutrition, or microbiology. Students also complete a professional placement, gaining hands-on experience in laboratory-based projects that simulate real-world biomedical research and industry practices. For those pursuing research careers or postgraduate study, the Honours year provides an immersive, one-year research project within a science discipline of choice. This advanced study develops high-level skills in literature review, experimental planning and execution, time management, organisational skills, and science communication and presentations. Graduates of the Bachelor of Medical Science, including Honours, are well-prepared for careers in medical research, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and public health, as well as providing a strong pathway into postgraduate medicine or other health professions.
