The Bachelor of Laws (Honours) – Legal Practice Entry at Flinders University provides a comprehensive and progressive legal education designed to prepare students for professional legal practice and advanced study. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in essential legal knowledge and skills through core topics such as Introduction to Law and Justice, Essential Legal Skills, Ethics and Professional Responsibility, Legal Innovation, Indigenous Peoples, Colonialism and Law, International Law and Global Perspectives, Criminal Law and Procedure, and Innovating Social Justice. These subjects establish a solid base for later, more specialised studies while introducing students to both the theoretical and practical aspects of law.The second year expands on this foundation with core legal topics including Torts, Contracts, Property, Equity and Trusts, Constitutional Law, Jurisprudence, Real Property Law, Corporate Law, and applied law subjects such as Law in a Digital Age or Law in Action. These courses further develop students’ understanding of substantive law while cultivating analytical, problem-solving, and professional skills essential for legal practice. In the third year, students engage with advanced legal topics such as Administrative Law, Constitutional Law, Civil Procedure, and Evidence, along with continued study in applied areas such as Law in a Digital Age or Law in Action. Additionally, students select four law option topics to explore specialised areas of interest, allowing them to tailor their degree to career goals and professional aspirations. The Honours year provides the opportunity for in-depth research and advanced study. Students complete an honours thesis, supported by access to two postgraduate-level option topics, which allows them to develop expertise in a specific area of law while honing research, critical thinking, and legal writing skills. This structured approach ensures graduates of the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) – Legal Practice Entry are well-prepared for professional practice, leadership roles, and further study. Completion of the degree also provides direct entry to the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, delivered in collaboration with Leo Cussen in Adelaide, enabling students to meet the requirements for admission as legal practitioners and enter the profession with confidence, competence, and practical experience.
