Course Curriculum

The language programs at Flinders University are designed to develop both linguistic proficiency and cross-cultural understanding, with a structure that progressively builds knowledge and skills over three years. In the first year, students focus on foundational concepts in language learning and communication. Core topics include strategies for language learning, how language works, world languages, and communication. Alongside these, students select two subjects from Major A and two from Major B or other option topics, allowing them to begin specialising while maintaining a broad learning base. This first year establishes the skills needed to analyse language systems, understand cultural contexts, and communicate effectively.In the second year, students deepen their expertise and broaden their study options. The curriculum includes two subjects from Major A, two from Major B, Minor A, or option topics, and another four subjects from Minor B or other option topics. This structure allows students to tailor their studies to their interests, combining intensive language development with exploration of complementary areas such as culture, translation, or applied linguistics. The second year also introduces more complex linguistic and cultural concepts, preparing students for advanced study and practical applications in real-world contexts.The third year emphasises advanced proficiency and specialised knowledge, preparing students for professional or academic pathways. Students complete four subjects from Major A, two from Major B, Minor A, or option topics, and two more from Major B, Minor B, or other option topics. This year consolidates language skills while fostering cross-cultural competency, research abilities, and analytical skills. By the end of the program, graduates have developed strong communication abilities, deep cultural awareness, and the adaptability required for international workplaces.
