The Bachelor of Information Technology (Forensic Computing and Cybersecurity) at Flinders University is designed to produce graduates who are skilled in both core IT disciplines and forensic investigation, forming part of one of Australia’s most comprehensive forensic science programs alongside Forensic and Analytical Chemistry and Forensic Biology. Graduates earn a fully accredited IT degree while specialising in areas such as digital and computer forensics, forensic criminalistics, internet and network forensics, mobile device forensics, evidence evaluation, and crime scene management. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in computing and forensic practice. Core topics include computer programming, computational intelligence, networks, cybersecurity, databases, and introductory forensic techniques. These subjects develop essential technical and analytical skills required for advanced study. The second year expands on these fundamentals with forensic criminalistics, data engineering, digital forensics, systems software, and workplace preparation. Students develop the ability to investigate digital evidence, manage complex IT systems, and apply their knowledge in professional environments. In the third year, students specialise further, focusing on crime scene management, information security, mobile device forensics, evidence evaluation, and cloud and distributed computing. This year includes a six-week industry-based practical component, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in real-world forensic and IT settings. For those pursuing honours, the program offers a one-year honours pathway, including an honours thesis and a selection of advanced topics in computer science, engineering, mathematics, and digital health. This pathway provides in-depth research experience and prepares graduates for leadership roles or further postgraduate study.Graduates are well-equipped for careers as forensic computing specialists, digital investigators, cybersecurity analysts, or IT professionals with forensic expertise. The combination of IT proficiency, forensic knowledge, and practical experience ensures they can analyse and manage digital evidence, support criminal investigations, and provide expert input in legal and professional contexts. This degree provides a highly sought-after skill set, preparing graduates to contribute effectively to cybercrime prevention, digital forensics, and forensic investigation both in Australia and internationally.
