Course Curriculum

The Bachelor of Information Technology (Data Analytics) at Flinders University is designed to develop graduates capable of managing, analysing, and generating insights from complex data systems, bridging the gap between organisational needs and technical solutions. The degree combines theoretical knowledge with practical experience to prepare students for roles such as data analyst, data engineer, database administrator, or IT consultant.In the first year, students build a strong foundation in computing and data analysis. Core topics include fundamentals of computing, computer programming, database design, network systems, cybersecurity, professional skills, and data science. These subjects provide the technical and analytical skills necessary for advanced study and real-world applications.The second year focuses on expanding technical expertise and data analytics capabilities. Students study computer programming, database and conceptual modelling, computer networks, human factors in computing, systems software, and data analytics. This combination of IT and analytics topics prepares students to design systems and interpret complex datasets effectively.In the third year, students engage with advanced computing and data analytics topics. Core subjects include computer programming, cloud and distributed computing, information security, software testing and quality assurance, project management, and data mining and knowledge discovery. Students also participate in Flinders’ IT practicum, gaining hands-on industry experience by working alongside professional teams to apply their skills in real-world projects.For those pursuing honours, the program offers a one-year pathway including a major thesis and a selection of advanced topics from computer science, engineering, and mathematics. This provides in-depth research experience and the skills required to manage specialised projects or pursue further postgraduate study.Graduates leave the program with a combination of technical expertise, analytical skills, and professional experience, ready to contribute across diverse sectors such as business intelligence, finance, healthcare, government, and technology.
