The Bachelor of Information Technology (Business and Information Systems) at Flinders University is structured to develop graduates who can bridge the gap between business needs and IT solutions, combining technical expertise with practical industry experience. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in computing and business-relevant skills. Core topics include fundamentals of computing, computer programming, database design, network systems, cybersecurity, professional skills, and organisational behaviour. This year equips students with essential knowledge and practical abilities needed for more advanced study and real-world applications. The second year expands technical and business expertise. Students study intermediate computer programming, database and conceptual modelling, computer networks, systems software, and human factors in computing. Complementing these are business-focused topics such as entrepreneurship, small business management, social media marketing, and business leadership. This combination develops both the technical proficiency and the strategic understanding required to align IT solutions with organisational goals. In the third year, students focus on advanced IT and enterprise systems management. Core topics include cloud and distributed computing, information security, software testing and quality assurance, project management, and contemporary studies on the future of work in the digital age. A highlight of this year is the Flinders Information Technology practicum, a nationally recognised work placement where students gain hands-on experience working with industry teams, applying their technical and professional skills to real-world projects. The degree’s industry-aligned approach ensures graduates are prepared for roles such as business analyst, ICT project manager, or consultant. Students leave the program with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, able to manage enterprise systems, develop technology-driven business solutions, and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. With skills in IT, project management, and business strategy, graduates are ready to make an immediate impact in Australian and international technology sectors, consulting firms, and public service organisations.
