Course Curriculum

Discover how each program is uniquely designed to inspire learning

The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering provides students with a structured and progressive curriculum that develops both foundational knowledge and advanced expertise across the four years of study. In the first year, students are introduced to core topics that establish the basis of engineering practice. These include Engineering Design, which focuses on creativity and problem-solving; Materials and Systems, which explores the properties and applications of engineering materials; Programming, which equips students with computational problem-solving skills; along with Mathematics and Physics, which provide essential theoretical foundations. Electronics is also studied, offering insight into the functioning of modern technological systems. Together, these subjects lay the groundwork for deeper exploration in later years. The second year advances into more specialized areas, building technical competence in Mechanics and Structures, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics and Energy Systems, Mechanical Practice, and Dynamics. At this stage, students also select and begin a major through optional topics, allowing them to tailor their studies to specific areas of interest and career goals. The third year emphasizes practical experience and professional development. Students undertake a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Placement, which provides invaluable real-world industry exposure. They also study Engineering Management and Workplace Skills, preparing them for leadership, collaboration, and effective communication in professional environments. Additional optional topics aligned with the chosen major further refine technical expertise. In the fourth and final year, students deepen their knowledge through advanced subjects such as Mechanical Design, Systems Engineering, and Research Methods. A significant component of this year is the Research Project, which allows students to apply theoretical understanding and technical skills to investigate a real-world engineering problem. Complemented by optional topics in their major, this final stage equips graduates with the advanced knowledge, professional skills, and research capability needed to thrive in diverse engineering careers.
