Course Curriculum

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) at Flinders University is structured to provide students with a comprehensive blend of theoretical knowledge, subject-specific expertise, and practical experience over four years, preparing them for careers as skilled and adaptable secondary school teachers. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge in inclusive education, pedagogy and practice, communities of practice, and literacy across the curriculum. They also begin their focus on specialised subjects by completing nine units from an approved major and nine units from a second approved major, ensuring a balanced introduction to their chosen teaching areas.The second year expands on this foundation with topics such as Psychology for Children and Adolescents and a professional experience placement, giving students practical insights into classroom dynamics and student learning. In addition, students complete 13.5 units from each of their approved majors, allowing them to deepen their subject knowledge while applying educational theories in practical contexts.In the third year, students further refine their teaching skills with a focus on Indigenous Pedagogy, Inclusive Teaching Practices, and Digital Literacy and Numeracy. Another professional experience placement provides hands-on classroom exposure, and students complete 4.5 units from each of their majors along with two option topics. This stage of the degree emphasizes the development of inclusive, culturally responsive, and technology-informed teaching practices.The fourth and final year consolidates learning and prepares students for professional practice. Core topics include The Professional Educator and another professional experience placement, allowing students to apply their accumulated knowledge and skills in real classrooms. Students also complete nine units from each major and have the option to undertake an internship or select two elective or option topics, providing opportunities for further specialisation. By the end of the degree, graduates are well-equipped to deliver effective, engaging, and inclusive secondary education, ready to inspire and support students while making a meaningful contribution to the learning environment.
