The Bachelor of Education (Primary) at Flinders University is structured to provide a comprehensive combination of theory, practical skills, and professional experience across four years, preparing students to become confident and effective primary school teachers. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in inclusive education, language development, pedagogy and practice, effective teaching practice, reading, comprehending and producing texts, communities of practice, and expressive arts. Students also complete 4.5 units of a STEM Teaching Minor, allowing them to develop specialised skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education. The second year expands on this foundation by focusing on curriculum areas and applied teaching experience. Core topics include Humanities and Social Sciences (Primary), Primary Mathematics, Indigenous Pedagogy, and a professional experience placement. Students also continue their STEM minor and undertake two Teaching Curriculum Specialisation Minors, enabling them to tailor their learning to their career interests while gaining practical classroom skills. In the third year, students deepen their teaching expertise through topics such as Primary Science, Inclusive Teaching Practices, Health and Physical Education, and Digital Literacy and Numeracy. Another professional experience placement provides hands-on classroom experience, while nine units from a Teaching Curriculum Specialisation Minor allow students to develop specialised teaching competencies aligned with their interests and goals. The fourth year focuses on consolidating knowledge and preparing students for full professional practice. Core topics include The Professional Educator, Literacy in Inclusive Classrooms, Evidence-Based Practices for Autism, and additional professional experience. Students also complete two STEM Teaching Minor topics and have the option to undertake an internship or select two elective topics, along with two additional option topics. By combining theoretical study with extensive placements and specialised curriculum, graduates are equipped to teach across the primary years with confidence, creativity, and inclusive practices, ready to make a meaningful impact on children’s learning and development.
