The Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (Birth to 8) at Flinders University is structured to provide a comprehensive blend of theory, practice, and professional experience across four years. In the first year, students establish foundational knowledge in early childhood education through topics such as philosophies of early childhood, play, learning and development, expressive arts, pedagogies of belonging, health and physical education, and partnerships with parents and communities. This year also includes a professional experience placement, allowing students to apply their learning in real-world early childhood settings and begin developing practical teaching skills. The second year builds on this foundation by focusing on inclusive education, language development, play and development, Indigenous pedagogy, and early literacy and numeracy. Students also complete nine units from a Teaching Curriculum Specialisation Minor, which allows them to tailor their studies to specific areas of interest. This combination of theoretical knowledge and applied learning ensures students are prepared to support diverse learners and foster equitable educational environments. In the third year, students advance their professional practice through further placements and specialised topics such as reading in the early years, mathematics, relational pedagogies in early childhood, and discovering technologies. An additional 4.5 units from a Teaching Curriculum Specialisation Minor provide opportunities for deeper exploration in areas aligned with students’ career goals. This year emphasizes developing the confidence, leadership, and reflective skills necessary to manage classrooms and support children’s learning effectively. The fourth and final year focuses on consolidating knowledge and preparing students for graduation and professional practice. Core topics include professional experience, writing in the early years, curriculum programming and planning, leadership in early childhood, playing on country, and supporting children on the autism spectrum. Students also complete a further 4.5 units from a Teaching Curriculum Specialisation Minor. By combining extensive placements with advanced study in curriculum, pedagogy, and leadership, graduates leave equipped to teach across early childhood and junior primary settings, ready to inspire, support, and lead the next generation of learners.
