The Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (Birth to 5) at Flinders University is structured to provide a strong balance of theory and practice, preparing students to teach and support young children in their most formative years. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of early learning through topics such as philosophies of early childhood, play, learning and development, and pedagogies of belonging. These are complemented by subjects in arts, health and physical education, and partnerships with parents and communities, alongside their first professional experience placement, which provides valuable insights into working with children in real educational settings. The second year builds on this foundation by focusing on inclusive education and the diverse needs of learners. Students explore language development, respectful teaching, Indigenous pedagogy, and the role of play in children’s development, while also gaining practical skills in teaching early literacy, numeracy, and science in the early years. These subjects prepare future educators to foster curiosity, creativity, and resilience in young learners while addressing cultural and developmental diversity. In the third year, the program advances into specialised areas, including reading in the early years, mathematics, pedagogies in early childhood settings, and supporting children on the autism spectrum. Students also engage with topics in technology integration, leadership in early childhood education, and playing on country, which emphasises culturally responsive practices. A further professional experience placement ensures graduates are confident, capable, and ready to step into teaching roles upon graduation. Throughout the degree, the combination of academic study and practical training develops skills in communication, leadership, and reflective practice, while reinforcing the value of inclusivity and equity. This comprehensive program equips graduates with the knowledge, practical expertise, and professional experience needed to create engaging, supportive, and meaningful learning environments for young children, ensuring they are well-prepared for impactful careers in the growing early childhood education sector.
