The Bachelor of Disability and Developmental Education at Flinders University is a three-year program designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and professional experience to support people with disabilities across diverse contexts. The degree integrates theory, research, practicum placements, and applied learning to prepare graduates for careers in disability services, education, health, and community development.In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of disability studies. Core topics include Perspectives on Disability, Disability and Neurodiversity, Disability Across the Life Course, and Critical Issues in Disability. Students also develop essential skills in Research and Study Skills 1 and explore Communication Diversity and Support Needs. An introduction to the Disability Service Landscape provides context for current service models, while an option topic allows for personal interest exploration.The second year focuses on applied learning and professional practice. Students undertake Practicum 1, gaining valuable field experience, and study Employment and Disability, Advocacy and Working in Partnership, and Disability: Health and Wellbeing. Additional topics include Principles of Learning and Instruction, Instructional Strategies, and Legal and Ethical Aspects of Health Care. Research and Study Skills 2 strengthens students’ ability to evaluate evidence and apply findings in practice.In the third year, students deepen their expertise through advanced professional skills and practicum. Practicum 2 provides hands-on experience in service delivery and case management. Core topics include Positive Behaviour Support, Counselling Skills, Case Management and Support Coordination, and Building Community Capacity. Students also explore Communication Rights and Access and Developing Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses, reflecting the importance of empowerment, inclusion, and innovation in disability support. Research and Study Skills 3 further enhances critical inquiry and professional development.Graduates are prepared for diverse careers in disability services, advocacy, policy development, education, and community organisations, with strong practical experience and a focus on empowering people with disabilities to achieve independence and inclusion.
