Discover how each program is uniquely designed to inspire learning

The Bachelor of Criminology (Advanced) at Flinders University offers a structured pathway for students to develop a deep understanding of criminological theory, research, and professional practice. In the first year, students engage with foundational topics such as crime and criminology, the criminal justice system, and law in Australian society. They also select complementary subjects from psychology, political science, and sociology, providing a broad social sciences foundation that supports an interdisciplinary understanding of crime and justice. In the second year, the program builds on this foundation with enhanced topics that explore theory, research, and contemporary issues in criminal law, policing, society, and punishment. Students have the flexibility to choose from a wide range of option topics tailored to their interests, including forensic science, violent crime, crimes against populations, and terrorism. Additional elective topics in psychology, gender studies, and Australian studies allow students to deepen their knowledge and develop a well-rounded perspective on criminology and its societal impacts. The third year introduces advanced topics, where students apply their knowledge of criminological theory alongside advanced research methods and analysis. They select from innovative and topical option subjects, gaining specialised insights into areas such as criminal networks, corporate crime, international criminal justice, the Italian mafia, borders, migration and security, and miscarriages of justice. This stage emphasises the application of theory to complex contemporary issues and encourages students to develop expertise in areas of personal and professional interest. The honours year provides an opportunity for in-depth research and applied learning. Students undertake honours-level topics in advanced theory, research application, and applied research methods, culminating in an independent honours thesis supervised by an academic researcher. This year also includes field research through a work placement program, enabling students to gain practical experience and professional skills. Graduates of the Bachelor of Criminology (Advanced) leave the program equipped with a rigorous understanding of criminology, advanced research capabilities, and the professional competencies required to contribute meaningfully to the criminal justice sector and broader society.
