The Bachelor of Criminology at Flinders University provides a structured and immersive pathway for students to develop expertise in understanding crime, the criminal justice system, and strategies to promote justice and safety. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational topics including Crime and Criminology, the Criminal Justice System, Criminal Law in Practice, and interpreting crime data. Additional studies such as Race and Representation: Indigenous Identities, along with three option topics, give students a broad understanding of social and cultural contexts, laying the groundwork for deeper exploration in subsequent years. In the second year, the program builds on these foundations with subjects that focus on community safety, policing, and understanding victims and trauma. Core topics include Protecting the Safety of the Community: Sentencing and Corrections, Policing for the Future, and Understanding Victims and Trauma. These courses provide students with practical insights into the operations of the criminal justice system while highlighting the social and psychological dimensions of crime, emphasizing critical thinking and professional practice. The third year transitions students into advanced, specialised topics and practical experiences designed to prepare them for professional roles. Students explore Analysing Cybercrime and Digital Risk, Children, Young People and the Justice System, and Trauma-informed Practice in Criminal Justice. They also complete professional development and applied learning experiences through Building Criminology Careers: Industry Project and a Criminology Industry Placement, allowing students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings and gain valuable hands-on experience. This progressive structure ensures graduates leave the program with a strong theoretical foundation, practical skills, and industry experience. By combining academic study with real-world application, the Bachelor of Criminology equips students for careers in crime prevention, corrections, policy development, law enforcement, community services, and related fields. The degree prepares students to make meaningful contributions to safer, more just communities, translating their passion for justice into impactful professional practice.
