The Bachelor of Secondary Education course is structured over four years and equips future teachers with both theoretical knowledge and practical classroom experience. In the first year, students focus on foundational concepts such as literacy and numeracy, child and adolescent development, and introductory teaching methodologies, while also beginning studies in their chosen major and minor teaching areas. The second year deepens understanding through subjects like instructional design, health and communication, and trauma-informed practice, while also continuing discipline-specific learning. Transition to professional practice begins in this year, preparing students for the responsibilities of teaching. In the third year, students explore curriculum assessment, curriculum studies in their teaching specialisations, and undertake their first professional teaching placement through the subject Professional Experience A. Year four is dedicated to refining teaching skills and engaging in advanced professional preparation. Students study environmental sustainability, Indigenous education, and strategies for differentiated learning. They complete additional placements, develop a professional teaching portfolio, and undergo a series of "Transition to the Profession" subjects that gradually prepare them for full-time teaching roles. Across the program, students integrate academic content with real-world teaching experiences, completing a minimum of 80 days of supervised placement. The course ensures graduates are ready to teach from Years 7 to 12 in their areas of expertise and adapt to diverse classroom environments. With high demand for secondary educators in Australia, this program offers strong employment outcomes, supported by Federation University’s strong partnerships with schools across Victoria and commitment to student support.
