The Diploma of Health Science (Nursing) (CRICOS Code 103337G) is a comprehensive two-stage program designed to develop the academic, practical, and professional skills needed for a career in nursing within the Australian healthcare system. Stage 1, completed over two or three trimesters, consists of eight units focusing on foundational academic and employability skills. Core subjects include Communication Skills, Introductory Computing, Introductory Mathematics, Workplace Communication – Employability, and Project Management, along with three elective units selected by the student. This stage lays the groundwork for further study and professional development. Stage 2, completed over two semesters, introduces nursing-specific units that deepen students’ understanding of healthcare practice. In Semester 1, students undertake units such as Communication Skills for Nurses, Human Processes 1, Nursing and Midwifery in the Australian Healthcare Context, and Nursing Practice 1. Semester 2 continues with Human Processes 2, Older Adult Health, Legal and Ethical Requirements in Nursing, and Nursing Practice 2. These units are designed to equip students with practical experience and theoretical knowledge in areas critical to nursing, including patient communication, physiology, aged care, legal responsibilities, and professional ethics. Upon successful completion of the diploma, students receive 8 units of credit toward the Bachelor of Science (Nursing) at Edith Cowan University, providing a clear academic pathway for those who wish to further their nursing qualifications. The program is accredited by TEQSA as an AQF Level 5 course, ensuring quality and national recognition. Graduates are well prepared to make meaningful contributions in a range of healthcare settings and to transition smoothly into further study or entry-level roles in nursing.
