The Master of Music degree is structured to provide students with both focused specialist training in their chosen major and opportunities to broaden their musical knowledge through electives. Students select a major from four options: Classical Performance, Composition and Sonic Arts, Contemporary Performance, or Jazz Performance. The program includes core units such as Music of Our Time: The Australian Musical Landscape, The Music Business, and The Art of Teaching and Learning Music, which provide a broad understanding of the industry and pedagogical skills. Throughout the course, students complete a series of units within their major, developing technical skills, artistic expression, and professional competencies. In addition to their major studies, students must complete a WAAPA Music History elective and six other elective units chosen from a recommended list. These electives allow students to explore complementary areas outside their major, such as conducting, music technology, songwriting, music cultures of the world, or music history courses covering diverse genres and periods. This flexibility encourages interdisciplinary learning and personalising the study experience. The degree culminates in two substantial Creative Project units, where students undertake independent or collaborative work to showcase their skills and creativity in practical settings. These projects are supported by elective units that provide further depth and variety.Overall, the course balances specialist expertise with broad-based musical knowledge, preparing graduates for diverse careers in performance, composition, education, and music industry roles. The combination of practical training, academic study, and industry insight, delivered by expert practitioners, equips students with the skills needed to thrive in the evolving music landscape. With access to advanced facilities and mentorship, students gain real-world experience and professional readiness, making this program an excellent pathway for aspiring music professionals seeking both depth and versatility in their careers.
