Course Curriculum

Discover how each program is uniquely designed to inspire learning

The Bachelor of Civil and Environmental Engineering is a four-year degree that combines foundational civil engineering education with advanced environmental management training. Students must complete 30 core units, 2 elective units, and a Practicum unit. In the first year, students build a strong base in mathematics, mechanics, materials, electrical fundamentals, and engineering design, while being introduced to various engineering disciplines. This shared curriculum allows flexibility to change specializations without penalty. The second year focuses on surveying, ethics, engineering systems, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, dynamics, and the mechanics of solids, preparing students for more complex applications in civil and environmental engineering. Year three introduces key technical areas such as soil mechanics, structural analysis, concrete and steel design, engineering geology, and environmental engineering. Students also study risk management and hydrology, enabling them to assess and mitigate environmental impacts in real-world projects. In the final year, the focus shifts to construction technology, transportation engineering, site management, and project development. Depending on academic performance, eligible students may undertake a graded Honours thesis instead of the standard capstone project. The program includes a compulsory practicum, offering practical industry experience. Electives allow students to tailor their learning toward specific interests, with recommended options such as environmental impact assessment, railway design, instrumentation, petroleum geology, hydrostatics, advanced thermofluids, and civil engineering design. This course emphasizes a balance of theoretical knowledge, practical problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership skills. It prepares graduates to manage complex infrastructure projects while addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainability. With a multidisciplinary approach and strong industry alignment, the program equips students for careers in civil engineering, environmental consulting, infrastructure planning, and project management, ensuring they can contribute meaningfully to the development of sustainable, resilient communities.
