The Bachelor of Engineering (Civil Engineering) Honours course requires students to complete 30 core units, 2 elective units, and a practicum unit over four years. In the first year, students study foundational topics such as introduction to engineering, materials and manufacturing, engineering drawing and computer-aided design, engineering mechanics, electrical engineering fundamentals, energy and resource engineering, and mathematics. The second year introduces programming fundamentals, surveying, engineering innovation and ethics, engineering systems, mechanics of solids, engineering dynamics, and thermodynamics, along with one elective. In the third year, students focus on core civil engineering subjects such as soil mechanics, structural analysis, fluid mechanics, concrete and steel design, engineering geology, rock mechanics, and railway design, with an additional elective. In the final year, the course emphasizes practical and advanced topics, including construction technology, transportation engineering, civil engineering design, construction site management, hydrology and hydraulics, and engineering management. Students also undertake a significant practicum unit and a project or honours thesis, depending on their academic performance. Those with a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 70 percent or higher may opt for a graded Honours degree, replacing the standard project units with honours thesis units. Recommended electives cover a broad range of specialized subjects such as instrumentation, industrial maintenance, hydrostatics, maritime engineering, advanced materials, data communications, mechanical design, environmental engineering, drilling engineering, and reservoir engineering, allowing students to tailor their studies to specific interests or career goals. This comprehensive structure provides a strong technical foundation alongside practical skills and industry knowledge, preparing graduates for professional engineering roles in civil infrastructure design, construction, and management.
