The Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Edith Cowan University is a full-time course available at the Joondalup campus, with entry points in both Semester 1 and Semester 2. The program is designed to provide a strong foundation in biomedical science while allowing students to tailor their studies through a major, a minor plus electives, or a combination of both. The course consists of 16 core units and an additional 8 units that form a supplementary program, which includes either a full major, or a minor with two electives. Students are encouraged to consult with a Course Coordinator to select the most appropriate study path based on their career goals and academic background. In Year 1, students begin with fundamental subjects such as Society, Culture, and Health; Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2; Human Genetics; Introduction to Pathophysiology; Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry; and Human Evolution and Ecology. Depending on their chemistry background, students also take either Introductory Statistics or Chemistry for the Life Sciences. In Year 2, students progress to more specialised topics, including Applied Microbiology, Medical Biochemistry, Applied Physiology, and Advanced Biomedical Techniques. In each semester, two additional units are selected from the student's chosen major or minor area of study.Year 3 focuses on advanced knowledge and professional preparation. Students complete Biomedical Ethics and Professional Practice in Biomedical Science, along with two elective units selected from a range of specialised biomedical topics such as Medical Genetics, Developmental Biology, Histopathology, and Human Reproduction. Four further units are taken from the student’s selected supplementary program. This structure ensures students graduate with a strong theoretical base, extensive lab experience, and the flexibility to specialise in areas aligned with their interests and career goals, such as medical research, diagnostics, or healthcare science.
