The Master of Teaching (Secondary) at Deakin University requires the completion of 16 credit points along with three non-credit compulsory units. These non-credit units include DAI001 Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin, which must be completed in the first trimester, and the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Tests (ELN010 and ELN011). These are mandatory components of the course and are essential for graduation but do not contribute to the total credit points. The program structure consists of eight credit points of core units that provide foundational knowledge and pedagogical skills for secondary teaching. In addition to the core units, students must complete two credit points of curriculum study in each of their two teaching method areas, which prepare them to teach specific subjects in secondary schools. Furthermore, students choose a specialisation worth four credit points from a selection that includes Inclusive Education, Internship, Languages Teaching, Research, or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). These specialisations allow students to tailor their studies to align with their interests or career goals. Most units are equivalent to one credit point, making it easy to plan a study load. Full-time students typically undertake four credit points per trimester across two trimesters each year, allowing the course to be completed in two years. The structure of the program is designed to provide a balanced combination of theory, subject-specific teaching knowledge, and practical experience. It ensures graduates are well-prepared to enter the teaching profession with a clear understanding of educational practices and student needs. The flexibility in choosing specialisations and teaching methods also means that students can adapt the course to suit their personal and professional aspirations, making it a comprehensive and accessible pathway into secondary education.
