The Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) at Deakin University requires the completion of 16 credit points to graduate. This includes a compulsory 0-credit-point unit, DAI001 Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin, which must be completed during the first study period. In addition to this, students must complete 12 credit points of core units that cover essential areas of early childhood education, including child development, curriculum planning, inclusive education, and professional practice. These core units are designed to equip students with a strong foundation in teaching and learning, ensuring they are well-prepared to work with young children in a variety of educational settings. To complete the degree, students must also choose one of three available specialisations, each worth 4 credit points. The options are Early Childhood Inquiry, Research, or Trauma Responsive Practice. Each specialisation offers a unique focus and allows students to tailor their studies according to their interests or career goals. For example, students who are interested in exploring pedagogical questions might choose Early Childhood Inquiry, while those who wish to focus on evidence-based practice could pursue the Research specialisation. The Trauma Responsive Practice option is ideal for students who want to understand and support children affected by trauma. Most units in the program are worth one credit point. As a full-time student, the recommended study load is four credit points per trimester, with two trimesters typically completed each year. This structure allows students to complete the course in two years. Throughout the program, students engage in both theoretical learning and practical experience, including professional placements in early childhood settings. This combination ensures that graduates are not only academically prepared but also confident and competent in real-world teaching environments, ready to make a positive impact in the lives of young children and their families.
