Course Curriculum

The Diploma of Science at Deakin College is designed to give students a strong foundation in scientific knowledge and practical skills, leading directly into the second year of a range of Deakin University bachelor degrees. To successfully complete the diploma, students must complete and pass eight credit-point units, along with two compulsory zero-credit-point modules. From Trimester 3, 2024, some international students will also be required to complete an additional compulsory module to support language development. The units chosen depend on the student’s intended bachelor degree pathway at Deakin University and are tailored to align with areas such as Biomedical Science, Environmental Science, Forensic Science, Zoology, and more. The available unit options include a wide selection of science-focused subjects such as Understanding Health, Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology, Ecology and the Environment, Cells and Genes, Fundamentals of Environmental Science, and Chemistry for the Professional Sciences. There are also mathematics-based units like Introduction to Statistics and Data Analysis, and Introduction to Mathematical Modelling, which support students aiming for more technical or research-based careers. Compulsory modules include DAI001 Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin, and SLE010 Laboratory and Fieldwork Safety Induction Program, both of which are essential for academic and professional preparedness. For international students, the LDM100 Language Development Module may be required to strengthen academic communication and language proficiency. The structure of this diploma ensures a well-rounded scientific education, equipping students with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience. This prepares them not only for success in their university studies but also for future careers in diverse scientific fields such as research, health, environmental management, and biotechnology.
