The Diploma of Communication at Deakin College is structured to provide students with a broad foundation in communication and media, tailored to prepare them for second-year entry into a relevant Deakin University bachelor degree. To successfully complete the diploma, students must pass eight credit-point units and one compulsory zero-credit-point module. From Trimester 2, 2024, some international students will also be required to complete the Language Development Module (LDM100), which supports academic English and communication skills.The diploma offers a wide range of unit choices, allowing students to align their studies with their intended major at Deakin University. Core units cover essential topics across advertising, public relations, journalism, digital media, animation, criminology, and communication design. Options include Gutenberg to Zuckerberg: Communication in Everyday Life (ACC100), Your Future Direction (AWL100), Advertising Principles and Practices (ALA101), Creative Brand Communication (ALA102), Introduction to Public Relations (ALR103), Strategic Communication and Writing (ALR104), and Introduction to Journalism (ALJ111), among others. Units like Making Social Media (ALM101), Making Video (ALM102), and Digital Photography (ACI102) focus on practical digital content creation, while criminology units such as Introducing Crime and Criminology (ACR101) and Introducing Crime and Criminal Justice (ACR102) provide insights into justice and law enforcement systems.Design and media-focused options, including Design Thinking (ADD101), Type Foundations (ADD106), Principles of Animation (ADA107), and UX Fundamentals (ADT103), support students interested in creative and digital design careers. The compulsory Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin module (DAI001) ensures all students understand and commit to responsible academic conduct.This flexible course structure enables students to explore diverse fields within communication and related disciplines, making it a strong entry point for careers in media, public relations, journalism, advertising, criminology, digital content, and creative industries.
