To complete the Bachelor of Nursing at Deakin University, students are required to successfully complete 24 credit points. This includes 21 credit points of core units, 2 credit points of open elective units, and 1 credit point of course elective units. In addition, students must complete DAI001 Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin, a compulsory 0-credit-point unit, in their first study period. Most units are worth one credit point. Full-time students typically study four credit points per trimester and undertake two trimesters each year. The course is structured to progressively develop nursing knowledge and clinical skills, beginning with foundational subjects in the first year such as anatomy and physiology, evidence-based practice, and person-centred health assessment. These are complemented by clinical placement units focusing on safe and quality nursing care. The first year also includes a unit on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples' history, culture, and health. In the second year, students engage with more focused topics including primary health care, mental health, and the quality use of medicines, along with additional placements to apply their learning in real healthcare settings. By the third year, students are prepared to tackle complex healthcare issues through units in aged care, chronic illness, mental health, and a capstone clinical placement in comprehensive nursing practice. Elective and course elective units provide opportunities for students to explore specific areas of interest within the nursing field. Throughout the course, students must also meet the university’s academic progress and conduct requirements. This structured approach ensures that graduates are well-prepared for professional practice and meet the eligibility requirements for registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
