The Bachelor of Laws at Deakin University includes a comprehensive set of core units designed to develop a deep understanding of legal principles and prepare students for professional practice. Students must complete a series of compulsory law units, which cover key areas of legal education and form the foundation of the degree. These include Legal Research and Statutory Interpretation (MLL110), Resolving Disputes and Legal Communication (MLL113), and foundational units such as Criminal Law (MLP114), Contract A and B (MLP119 and MLP219), Torts (MLP213), and Property Law (MLP327). As students progress, they build expertise through advanced units like Constitutional Law (MLP323), Corporate Law (MLP331), Evidence (MLP334), and Administrative Law (MLP424). The program also includes essential skills-focused subjects such as Legal Practice and Ethics (MLP235) and Civil Procedure and Dispute Resolution (MLP391), ensuring graduates understand both the theoretical and procedural aspects of legal practice. The degree culminates in the capstone unit, Advanced Legal Problem Solving and Persuasion (MLL427), which integrates and applies students' learning in a practical, real-world context. Students are also required to complete a compulsory zero-credit-point module that reinforces academic integrity and professional responsibility. In addition to core units, students can select from a wide range of elective units, allowing them to explore areas of interest such as commercial, criminal, or international law. Work Integrated Learning (WIL) or practical course elective units, such as internships and participation in Deakin’s Law Clinic, offer valuable real-world experience by allowing students to work on live legal cases under the guidance of experienced practitioners. This structured mix of theory, practice, and professional skills ensures that Deakin Law graduates are well-prepared for legal practice or alternative careers in government, business, policy, or public administration.
