To complete the Bachelor of Information Technology at Deakin University, students must successfully pass a total of 24 credit points. This includes three compulsory, non-credit units: Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin, the Safety Induction Program, and Career Tools for Employability. These are completed early in the course to support student success and workplace readiness. The degree structure includes 12 credit points of core units, which cover fundamental IT knowledge and skills essential for all graduates. In addition, students complete 3 credit points of information technology capstone units, which typically involve project-based learning and practical application of skills in real-world or simulated environments. The remaining 9 credit points allow for flexibility and personalisation. Students can choose to complete one major (6 credit points) along with 3 credit points of open electives, or one minor (4 credit points) plus 5 elective credit points, or even two minors (8 credit points) and one elective credit point. This design supports a tailored educational experience aligned with individual interests and career goals. To ensure academic progression, students may take no more than 10 credit points at level 1 (introductory level) and must complete at least 6 credit points at level 3 (advanced level). Most units are worth one credit point each. For full-time students, the usual study load is four credit points per trimester, across two trimesters each year. This structured yet flexible approach helps students build a strong IT foundation while allowing them to explore specialised areas and elective interests, preparing them for a wide range of roles in the information technology sector upon graduation.
