The Bachelor of Forensic Science at Deakin University requires the completion of 24 credit points. This includes three compulsory zero-credit-point units: Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin (DAI001), the Laboratory and Fieldwork Safety Induction Program (SLE010), and Career Tools for Employability (STP010), all designed to prepare students for academic success, safe practical work, and professional development. Students must complete 12 core units that cover the foundational and advanced principles of forensic science. In addition, they must choose one major—either forensic biology or forensic chemistry—which accounts for 6 credit points and allows for specialization based on career interests. The remaining 6 credit points are comprised of open elective units, giving students the flexibility to explore subjects outside their major or complement their forensic studies with additional relevant knowledge. To ensure depth and progression, the course limits the number of first-year level units to a maximum of 10 credit points and requires at least 6 credit points to be completed at the third-year level, with a minimum of 4 of these being SLE-coded science units. As most units carry one credit point, full-time students typically complete four units per trimester, across two trimesters each year. This course structure balances core knowledge with specialization and elective breadth, while also embedding critical safety, employability, and academic integrity components. It ensures that graduates not only possess strong technical skills but also meet professional standards expected in the forensic science industry.
