The Bachelor of Environmental Science and Sustainability at Deakin University is structured to provide students with a strong foundation in both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for tackling modern environmental challenges. To complete the degree, students must successfully pass 24 credit points. This includes three compulsory 0-credit-point units: Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin, the Laboratory and Fieldwork Safety Induction Program, and Career Tools for Employability, all designed to support professional development and workplace readiness from the start. The course features 18 core credit points that cover key areas such as environmental processes, sustainability principles, ecological management, and the social and scientific dimensions of environmental challenges. Students can tailor their learning through 6 credit points of elective study, which may include one minor (4 credit points) plus two open elective units, or alternatively, 6 open electives alone. This flexibility allows students to pursue areas of personal interest or align their learning with specific career goals, such as marine management, climate change policy, urban sustainability, or ecotourism.Academic progression is also regulated to ensure a balanced and comprehensive learning experience. Students can complete a maximum of 10 credit points at level 1 (introductory level), and must achieve at least 14 credit points across levels 2 and 3, including a minimum of 6 credit points at level 3 (advanced level). Most units are worth one credit point each, and full-time students typically study four credit points per trimester over two trimesters per year.Overall, the course structure combines rigorous academic training with real-world applications through fieldwork, lab work, and professional placements, preparing graduates for impactful careers in sustainability, conservation, environmental policy, and resource management.
