Course Curriculum

The Bachelor of Design at Deakin University offers a comprehensive pathway for students to develop creativity and practical skills that prepare them for a dynamic career in design. To complete the degree, students need to pass a total of 24 credit points, which includes core units, majors, minors, and electives. Students are required to complete a compulsory academic integrity unit at the start of their study, along with three credit points from thematic core units and three credit points from employability sequence units. When choosing their area of specialisation, students have the option to complete either two majors, each worth eight credit points, with at least one major coming from the design discipline, or one design major combined with one minor, which accounts for four credit points. The remaining credit points can be made up of additional minors or open elective units, offering flexibility to tailor the degree to personal interests and career goals. There are certain level requirements, including a maximum of ten credit points at the first-year level and a minimum of six credit points at the advanced third-year level, ensuring a balanced progression throughout the course. Each unit typically carries one credit point, and full-time students usually study four credit points per trimester, with two trimesters available each year. This structure supports a steady and manageable workload while allowing students to gain in-depth knowledge in their chosen fields. The course emphasises the development of skills in design thinking, creative collaboration, and the use of industry-standard tools and technologies. Students have opportunities to work on real-world projects and engage with industry professionals, preparing them for diverse roles in various sectors such as digital media, interactive experiences, branding, and more.
