The core structure of the Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Deakin University is designed to provide a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, physiology, and research skills, while offering students the flexibility to tailor their degree through electives and major sequences. The course spans three years and includes a combination of compulsory core units, major units, and open electives. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge with core units such as Cells and Genes, Essential Skills in Science, Chemistry in Our World, Chemistry for the Professional Sciences, Biology: Form and Function, and Physics for the Life Sciences. Students also complete important preparatory modules such as Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin, Laboratory and Fieldwork Safety Induction, and Career Tools for Employability. Those with a strong chemistry background may choose to replace SLE133 with an elective. In the second year, the focus shifts to more advanced content in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Research Methods and Data Analysis, Genetics and Genomics, and Systems Physiology. These units deepen scientific understanding and analytical skills while allowing students to begin exploring specialised areas of interest through electives or major units. By the third year, students engage in higher-level study with core units including Applications of Biomedical Science, Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Advanced Cell Biology, and Professional Practice, which includes industry engagement and career preparation. Students can choose from six major sequences: environmental health, infection and immunity, medical biotechnology, medical genomics, molecular life sciences, or pharmaceutical science. Throughout the course, students select a total of seven open elective or major units, giving them the freedom to customise their learning to align with their career goals. The course also includes 80 to 160 hours of work placement, ensuring students graduate with valuable industry experience and a competitive edge in the biomedical science field.
