Course Curriculum

Discover how each program is uniquely designed to inspire learning

The course structure of the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy is designed to progressively develop professional knowledge, practical skills, and evidence-based practice across four years of study. In Year 1, students establish strong foundations in health sciences and occupational therapy principles. Core units introduce professional health practice, human structure and function, psychology, and the fundamentals of occupational therapy. These studies are complemented in Semester 2 by evidence-informed health practice, functional anatomy, Indigenous cultures and health behaviours, and key concepts in occupational therapy practice, supporting culturally safe and client-centred care. Year 2 builds on this foundation by focusing on the interaction between health, environment, and disability. Students study clinical pathophysiology, developmental neuroscience, and research design, alongside applied units in physical rehabilitation, ergonomics, safety science, and neuropsychiatry. These subjects strengthen clinical reasoning and prepare students for occupational therapy practice across physical, cognitive, and psychosocial domains. In Year 3, the emphasis shifts toward specialised practice areas, leadership, and professional skills. Students engage with advanced topics such as orthoses and upper limb rehabilitation, gerontology, counselling and group work, paediatrics, and community occupational therapy leadership. Management and teamwork studies further prepare students for collaborative practice in allied health settings. An alternate core option allows students to explore assistive technology and environmental design or undertake an honours proposal, supporting career or research pathways. Year 4 is dedicated to professional practice and consolidation of learning. Students complete extensive supervised fieldwork placements that provide immersive, real-world occupational therapy experience. Advanced professional practice units further refine clinical competence, ethical decision-making, and professional identity. An honours pathway is available through year-long research or professional projects. Overall, the structured progression from foundational knowledge to advanced clinical and professional practice ensures graduates are well prepared for effective occupational therapy practice, leadership roles, or further postgraduate study.
