Course Curriculum

Discover how each program is uniquely designed to inspire learning

The course structure for the Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine is carefully designed over four years to progressively develop strong scientific knowledge, technical skills, and professional competence in medical laboratory practice. In Year 1, students build essential foundations in biomedical and biosciences through units such as Foundations of Biomedical Science, Bioscience Practice, Chemistry for Biosciences, and Human Structure and Function. These studies introduce core concepts in human biology, chemistry, and laboratory techniques. Semester 2 expands this foundation with biostatistics, epidemiology, molecular genetics, cell biology, and integrated anatomy and physiology, alongside an understanding of Indigenous cultures and health behaviours to promote culturally informed healthcare practice. In Year 2, the focus shifts toward core laboratory medicine disciplines. Students study biochemistry, medical microbiology, medical science, and pathology in Semester 1, followed by specialised foundations in anatomical pathology, clinical biochemistry, haematology, and immunobiology in Semester 2. These units develop a comprehensive understanding of disease mechanisms and diagnostic laboratory testing across major pathology areas. Year 3 integrates advanced theoretical learning with increasing professional practice. Students undertake Topics in Medical Science and select discipline-specific options such as clinical microbiology, haematology, clinical biochemistry, immunology, or anatomical pathology, allowing them to tailor their expertise. This year also introduces substantial laboratory-based learning through Introduction to Laboratory Medicine Practice and Applied Laboratory Medicine Practice 1, which emphasise real-world diagnostic skills and workplace readiness. In Year 4, students consolidate and extend their professional capabilities through advanced applied laboratory practice units, providing extensive hands-on experience in clinical laboratory environments. The program concludes with Integrated Medical Science and advanced discipline options, including advanced microbiology, biochemistry, haematology, immunology, or anatomical pathology. Overall, the course structure ensures a strong progression from foundational science to advanced clinical practice, preparing graduates for professional roles in diagnostic laboratories or further study in medical science.
