Course Curriculum

The course structure of the Bachelor of Paramedicine is designed to progressively develop the knowledge, clinical competence, and professional skills required for effective paramedic practice across three years of study. In Year 1, students establish essential foundations in paramedicine and health sciences. Core units such as Essential Skills in Paramedicine and Introduction to Paramedic Professional Practice introduce the roles, responsibilities, and professional standards of paramedics. Studies in human structure and function and integrated anatomy and physiology provide a strong understanding of the human body, while units in professional health practice, evidence-informed care, and Indigenous cultures and health behaviours support ethical, culturally safe, and patient-centred practice. Preparation for paramedic clinical practice ensures students are ready for supervised placements. In Year 2, the focus shifts to applied clinical knowledge and decision-making. Students develop advanced understanding through applied paramedic bioscience, mental health studies, and clinical decision-making in paramedicine. Paramedic Clinical Practice units provide structured, hands-on experience in real clinical and pre-hospital environments, allowing students to apply theory to practice. Professional practice subjects further strengthen communication, teamwork, and accountability within healthcare settings. In Year 3, students consolidate and extend their skills to manage complex and high-acuity cases. Advanced bioscience units, complex professional practice, and mental health bioscience prepare students to respond effectively to diverse and challenging clinical situations. Clinical practice continues with increased autonomy, while preparation for independent professional practice focuses on transition to the workforce. The program culminates in a Paramedicine Professional Leadership Project, which develops leadership, critical thinking, and reflective practice skills. Overall, the structured progression from foundational learning to advanced clinical application ensures graduates are well prepared for independent, professional paramedic practice in a range of healthcare settings.
