Course Curriculum

Discover how each program is uniquely designed to inspire learning

The course structure for the Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy is designed to progressively develop scientific knowledge, clinical competence, and professional independence across three years of study. In Year 1, students establish strong foundations in health and biomedical sciences alongside an introduction to professional oral health practice. The extended unit Professional Foundations for Oral Health Therapy provides an early immersion into the role, responsibilities, and ethical standards of oral health therapists. Semester-based units in professional health practice, biomedical science, and human structure and function build essential understanding of the human body and healthcare environments. Studies in Indigenous cultures and health behaviours and integrated anatomy and physiology further support culturally safe and holistic care. In Year 2, the focus shifts toward developing clinical knowledge and skills specific to oral health therapy. Students undertake Introduction to Clinical Oral Health Therapy, which provides extensive hands-on learning and clinical exposure. Core subjects such as oral health sciences and risk assessment and care planning strengthen diagnostic and decision-making abilities. Learning is expanded through studies in dental materials, prosthodontics, orthodontics, and the management of medically compromised and special care patients. A year-long unit in oral pathology, oral medicine, and pharmacology equips students with critical knowledge to recognise disease processes and safely manage patient care. In Year 3, students consolidate and apply their learning through advanced, practice-focused units. Comprehensive care and treatment planning and evidence-based oral health practice emphasise integrated, patient-centred care and the application of research to clinical decision-making. The major capstone unit, The Independent Oral Health Therapist, develops autonomy, professional judgment, and readiness for independent practice. An alternate core option allows students to broaden their perspectives through studies in cultural aspects of oral health or First Nations’ perspectives. Overall, the course structure provides a clear progression from foundational sciences to advanced clinical practice, ensuring graduates are well prepared for professional registration and confident, independent practice as oral health therapists.
