Course Curriculum

Discover how each program is uniquely designed to inspire learning

The course structure is designed to progressively build strong foundations and advanced skills in mathematics, computing, statistics, and industrial optimisation over three years of study. In Year 1, students develop essential core knowledge through units such as Fundamentals of Programming and Introduction to Probability and Data Analysis, which establish computational thinking and statistical reasoning. Mathematical foundations are strengthened through alternate core options in linear algebra and calculus, allowing flexibility based on prior preparation. Students also explore Mathematical Modelling or Regression and Nonparametric Inference, gaining early exposure to applying mathematics to real-world problems. The inclusion of Integrating Indigenous Science and STEM broadens perspectives by connecting scientific learning with Indigenous knowledge systems. Electives across both semesters allow students to tailor their studies to individual interests while maintaining a balanced academic load. In Year 2, the focus shifts toward applied optimisation and systems thinking. Core units such as Calculus 2 and Linear Algebra 2 deepen theoretical understanding, while Operations Research, Supply Chain Modelling and Optimisation, Logistics Modelling and Optimisation, and Network Optimisation introduce practical techniques used to analyse and improve complex industrial and logistical systems. These subjects emphasise decision-making, efficiency, and optimisation in business and industry contexts. By Year 3, students engage with advanced and specialised topics that integrate theory with practice. Units such as Industrial Modelling and Optimisation, Applied Mathematical Modelling, Dynamic and Stochastic Modelling and Optimisation, and Network Optimisation for Transport and Logistics focus on complex, real-world systems under uncertainty. Mathematical Computing and Mathematical Statistics further enhance analytical and computational capabilities. The program culminates in an Industrial Project, where students apply their accumulated knowledge and skills to a substantial, industry-relevant problem. Overall, the course structure provides a coherent progression from foundational concepts to advanced applications, preparing graduates for professional roles or further study in industrial optimisation and related fields.
