The Bachelor of Actuarial Science at Curtin University is structured to provide students with a strong foundation in mathematics, statistics, finance, and economics, preparing them for careers in risk assessment, financial analysis, and actuarial practice. In the first year, students build core knowledge through introductory subjects such as Introduction to Actuarial Science, Probability and Data Analysis, and foundational mathematics. Additional units such as Integrating Indigenous Science and STEM provide a broad understanding of contemporary scientific and analytical methods, while alternate core subjects allow students to tailor their mathematical preparation with courses like Linear Algebra or Advanced Calculus. In the second semester of the first year, students begin applying core concepts to finance and actuarial practice through subjects such as Business Analysis for Investment and Introductory Actuarial Practices, alongside further studies in statistics and mathematics. The second year continues to develop technical expertise and analytical skills with subjects including Corporate Finance, Mathematical Statistics, Theory of Interest, Actuarial Economics, Financial Engineering, Statistical Modelling, and Stochastic Processes. Students also have opportunities to choose electives that enhance programming, operations research, portfolio management, and supply chain modelling, integrating practical and computational skills with their actuarial studies. The third year allows students to specialise in either the Actuarial Science Major or the Actuarial and Applied Statistics Major. The Actuarial Science Major is designed for those intending to qualify as professional actuaries and can provide exemptions from six subjects in the Actuaries Institute Foundation Program. The Actuarial and Applied Statistics Major focuses on applying statistical methods to real-world problems, equipping students with the skills to work in financial analytics, risk management, and data-driven decision-making.Throughout the course, students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills necessary to interpret complex data, assess risks, and present insights to stakeholders. Graduates are prepared for careers in insurance, finance, consultancy, and related fields, with a pathway toward professional actuarial accreditation and further advanced study.
