Discover how each program is uniquely designed to inspire learning

The Bachelor of Science (Multidisciplinary) at Curtin University offers a highly flexible and tailored approach to learning, designed for students who want to engage with science across multiple disciplines. In the first year, students select units spanning mathematics, communications, digital literacy, and foundational scientific disciplines, building a broad understanding of the principles and methods that underpin contemporary science. Options include introductory courses in biology, chemistry, physics, geology, astronomy, environmental science, engineering, data science, and more. Students can also choose a first-year stream aligned with their interests, such as Chemistry, Earth Science, Engineering Sciences, Environmental Science, Information and Communication Technology, Mathematics, Physics, Software Development, or a Multidisciplinary Science elective stream. This approach provides both depth and breadth, enabling students to explore multiple areas before committing to a major. In the second year, students progress into a specialised major of their choice, including Computational Sciences, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Engineering Science, or Physical Sciences, while continuing to engage with the Multidisciplinary Science Elective Stream. This allows students to develop advanced knowledge in a particular field while maintaining interdisciplinary awareness. Core elements include experimental design, analytical skills, problem-solving, and the application of scientific principles to complex, real-world problems. The course structure is highly adaptable to individual student backgrounds. For example, students’ prior mathematics achievement determines the appropriate mathematics units, ranging from Introductory Mathematics to Advanced Calculus and Linear Algebra. Similarly, digital literacy and communications units are tailored to students’ experience in computing or engineering. Students are encouraged to make strategic choices in discipline streams and elective units to create a personalised curriculum that aligns with their interests and career goals.By combining foundational knowledge, interdisciplinary exposure, and specialised study, the Bachelor of Science (Multidisciplinary) prepares graduates for diverse career paths in research, industry, government, or further study in science, engineering, technology, and data-driven fields, equipping them with the skills to tackle complex, multidisciplinary challenges.
