Course Curriculum

The Bachelor of Education (Primary) course structure is designed to progressively develop students’ knowledge, teaching skills, and professional experience over four years, ensuring graduates are well prepared for primary teaching practice. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation in child development, communication, and core curriculum areas. Semester 1 introduces child development, professional communication, early years English, and the first professional teaching practice, allowing students to begin understanding classroom environments early in the degree. Semester 2 broadens this foundation by focusing on global awareness, performing arts, digital teaching and learning, and numeracy, supporting the development of well-rounded educators with strong literacy, numeracy, and creative teaching skills. In Year 2, the emphasis shifts toward subject-specific pedagogy and inclusive teaching practice. Students study health and physical education, inquiry-based science teaching, and theories of inclusion and differentiation, alongside their first extended professional experience focused on developing essential classroom skills. In Semester 2, students deepen their understanding of mathematics and English pedagogy while completing a second professional experience that emphasises diversity and inclusive classroom practice. Year 3 further strengthens curriculum expertise and contextual understanding. Students extend their English and mathematics teaching skills, explore visual and media arts education, and examine education policy and its impact on classroom practice. They also engage in humanities and social sciences inquiry and undertake an advanced professional experience to refine their teaching capabilities. In Year 4, students consolidate their professional identity and readiness for the teaching profession. Semester 1 focuses on research-informed English teaching and professional transition skills, while the final special study period consists of a full-time internship placement. This final professional experience immerses students in a primary school setting for an extended duration, enabling them to demonstrate advanced teaching competence, professional confidence, and readiness for registration as primary teachers.
